TOYDRUM preview forthcoming album with 'God Song'
TOYDRUM, the musical project between UNKLE’s Pablo Clements and James Griffith, and the late Gavin Clark, are releasing their debut album ‘Evangelist’ later this year.
Clark, who suffered from anxiety, depression and alcoholism, passed away in his home earlier this year. Before his death, he was working with TOYDRUM on a concept album, ‘Evangelist’, based loosely based on his own life. After his death, Clements and Griffith vowed to complete the album.
Clark’s eldest son, Michael, sings backing vocals on two of the tracks. The composer Ludovico Einaudi also features on the end of the track ‘Never Feel This Young’ and Bad Seed and Grinderman member Warren Ellis plays dream like viola on the track ‘I’m In Love Tonight’ while other contributions come from many of Clark’s close friends.
Most of the material featured on ‘Evangelist’ was recorded live and some of the vocals were done in just a few takes.
The album featured heavily in Shane Meadows’ recent series ‘This Is England 90’, with seven tracks making the final soundtrack. Meadows, a frequent collaborator with Clark (Clark wrote at least one song for every project Meadows worked on) comments: “[Gavin Clark’s] music elevated my early work from student tat (in the early 90’s) into something resembling art, he’s penned at least one unforgettable song for pretty much everything I’ve ever made and his latest, as yet unreleased songs, are his greatest and have once again become the emotional heartbeat of my latest project.”
‘Evangelist’ is released December 11th via Underscore Collective. Pre-order the record here.
